Cut Faster. Work Safer. Go Cordless — Without Compromise.

The Makita GAG01M1 40V Max XGT® Brushless Cordless Angle Grinder delivers corded-class power in a fully cordless package, engineered for professionals who cut tile, concrete, rebar, pipe, and conduit daily. Rated at 8,500 RPM with automatic speed and torque adjustment, this grinder keeps pace with your toughest applications — and the job site's tightest timelines.

Key Features & What They Mean for Your Work

  • Brushless 40V Max Motor → Corded 13-AMP Performance: Makita's proprietary brushless motor extracts maximum power from the XGT® 40V platform — delivering comparable output to a corded 13-amp grinder with the freedom of cordless mobility. Which means: no cord dragging across a concrete deck or hunting for an outlet 60 feet up a scaffold.
  • Up to 60% Faster Cutting Speed → More Rebar Per Hour: Optimized torque curve accelerates through 5/8" rebar faster than comparable cordless models. Which means: faster project completions and reduced battery drain per cut.
  • AFT® (Active Feedback-sensing Technology) → Kickback Protection: Instantly shuts the motor if the wheel binds or stalls. Which means: a critical safety net that protects both the operator and the tool during unexpected material grabs.
  • Electric Brake Stops Wheel in ≤2 Seconds → Faster Repositioning: No coasting, no waiting — the disc stops immediately after trigger release. Which means: quicker task transitions and reduced accidental contact risk.
  • Automatic Speed Change Mechanism → Consistent Results Across Materials: Intelligently adjusts speed and torque based on load demands. Which means: the grinder optimizes itself whether you're surface-grinding welds or cutting through conduit.
  • Anti-Restart Mechanism → Safe Battery Hot-Swaps: Prevents unintended startup when a charged battery is inserted while the switch is on. Which means: safe, confident battery changes in the field.
  • Soft Start → Controlled Spinup: Gradually increases speed on startup to eliminate violent startup torque. Which means: better control from the first second and reduced stress on the disc and arbor.
  • Quick Guard Rotation + Lock-On Sliding Switch → Tool-Less Setup: Reposition the wheel guard without tools and maintain trigger engagement on long cuts without fatigue. Which means: faster job setup and reduced hand strain on extended applications.
  • XGT® Smart Communication → Battery Longevity: Digital communication between tool, battery, and charger monitors and manages power delivery. The included 4.0Ah battery reaches full charge in ~45 minutes. Which means: minimal downtime between charges on a fast-moving job site.

How to Use the Makita GAG01M1

  1. Install the wheel guard — Rotate it to the position that keeps disc debris directed away from your body. Use the tool-less quick-rotation feature to adjust without wrenches.
  2. Mount your disc or wheel — Use the included wrench to secure a 4-1/2" or 5" disc rated at or above 8,500 RPM. Always confirm the RPM rating printed on the disc.
  3. Attach the side handle — Thread the handle into one of the three positions (left, right, or top) for optimal two-handed control during grinding or cutting.
  4. Insert the fully charged 40V XGT® battery — The anti-restart system will prevent startup if the lock-on switch is engaged. Always confirm the switch is in the OFF position before inserting the battery.
  5. Engage the lock-on sliding switch — For sustained cuts, slide into the lock-on position. For short bursts or precision work, use standard trigger operation.
  6. Begin grinding or cutting — Apply steady, moderate pressure. The automatic speed-change mechanism will optimize torque; do not force the tool through material.
  7. Release the trigger to stop — The electric brake engages immediately and stops the disc within 2 seconds. Wait for the disc to fully stop before setting the tool down or changing accessories.

Safety tip: Always wear ANSI-rated eye protection, hearing protection, and gloves when operating angle grinders. Inspect the grinding disc for cracks or chips before every use.

Pro Hacks & Power-User Tips

  • Use a flap disc for weld dressing: Swap the grinding wheel for a 40 or 60-grit flap disc to smooth welds and blend surfaces in one pass — faster and cleaner than a traditional grinding wheel for finish work.
  • Hot-swap between two batteries for uninterrupted work: Keep a second BL4040 on the DC40RA charger at all times. With a 45-minute charge time, you'll always have a fresh battery ready before the active one runs out.
  • Use the guard rotation for floor work: When grinding horizontal surfaces, rotate the guard to the 12 o'clock position to improve your sight line to the work surface and reduce debris blowback toward your face.
  • Set the side handle to the top for overhead cuts: The top-mount handle position provides better balance and reduces wrist fatigue when cutting overhead pipe or conduit.
  • Pair with a dust shroud for tile work: When cutting tile indoors, attach a compatible 5" dust shroud and connect to a HEPA vacuum to contain silica dust — required by OSHA regulations for enclosed spaces.
  • Let AFT® work for you: If the wheel binds mid-cut, let the tool restart rather than forcing through — the automatic shutdown protects both you and the disc. Reposition and re-enter the cut at a slight angle.

Makita GAG01M1 40V Max XGT GAG01M1 Brushless Cordless 4‐1/2” / 5" Angle Grinder Kit

The Makita XGT® brushless cordless 5 Inch cut-off angle grinder is powered by a Makita-built 40 Volt brushless motor that delivers an operating speed of 8500 RPM for heavy-duty applications. Grinder offers more cutting speed when cutting 5/8 Inch rebar that helps in cutting a wide range of materials such as tile, concrete, pipe, conduit and more. Electric current limiter reduces the overloading of motor in high torque applications. Automatic speed change mechanism adjusts the speed and torque automatically depending upon the applications. Electric brake ceases the grinding in just 2 seconds or less. If the rotation of the wheel comes to a stop, the active feedback-sensing technology turns off the motor immediately. Lock-on sliding switch offers good operating convenience and the quick guard rotation facilitates tool-less adjustments. Anti-restart mechanism prevents sudden initiation of the motor when the battery is inserted while the sliding switch is still on. Soft-start mechanism negates start-up reaction for easy initiation of the motor.

Applications

  • Digital communication between battery and tool, and battery to charger.
  • XGT provides two times longer sustained power under heavy load.
  • Tool and charger identification limits function and power, and limits charging of knock-off batteries.
  • Communication between battery and charger allows 2.5Ah battery to fully charge in 28 min. and 4.0Ah to reach full charge in 45 min.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers about this product, usage, and benefits.

Is the Makita GAG01M1 compatible with other Makita 40V XGT batteries?
Yes. The Makita GAG01M1 is built on the 40V Max XGT platform, which means it is fully compatible with all Makita 40V XGT lithium-ion batteries, including 2.5Ah, 4.0Ah, and larger capacity packs. This kit includes one BL4040 4.0Ah battery and a DC40RA rapid charger. Note: XGT 40V batteries are NOT compatible with Makita's 18V LXT or 12V CXT platforms. If you're expanding your tool fleet, the XGT platform is Makita's flagship professional line.
How does the Makita GAG01M1 compare to a corded 13-amp angle grinder?
The GAG01M1 is engineered to match the performance of a corded 13-amp angle grinder — without the cord. It delivers 8,500 RPM and up to 60% faster cutting speeds in applications like rebar cutting compared to many competing cordless models. The XGT platform provides two times longer sustained power under heavy load versus standard 18V platforms, making it a true professional-grade replacement for corded grinders on job sites where mobility and safety matter.
What is AFT® technology and why does it matter for safe grinding?
AFT® (Active Feedback-sensing Technology) is a Makita safety system that immediately shuts off the motor if the grinding wheel suddenly stops rotating — such as when it binds in material. This dramatically reduces the risk of kickback, one of the most dangerous hazards with angle grinders. Combined with the electric brake (which stops the wheel in 2 seconds or less) and the anti-restart mechanism, the GAG01M1 is one of the safest cordless grinders available for professional use.
What disc and wheel sizes fit the Makita GAG01M1?
The GAG01M1 accepts 4-1/2 inch and 5 inch grinding wheels, cutting discs, and accessories with a standard 7/8 inch arbor. It comes with a grinding wheel and wheel guard included in the kit. Compatible accessories include Type 27 grinding wheels, Type 1 cut-off wheels, flap discs, wire cups, and diamond blades rated for the 8,500 RPM max speed. Always verify that any disc or wheel you use is rated at or above 8,500 RPM for safe operation.
How fast does the 40V XGT 4.0Ah battery charge and what is the battery life per charge?
The included BL4040 4.0Ah battery charges fully in approximately 45 minutes using the included DC40RA rapid charger. Runtime varies by application — for heavy continuous grinding or cutting, expect roughly 30–50 minutes of active use per charge under load. For intermittent job-site use (which is typical), a single charge can last through a full work session. Purchasing a second 40V XGT battery is recommended for non-stop production environments.
What warranty does the Makita GAG01M1 come with?
The Makita GAG01M1 kit is backed by Makita's 3-year limited warranty covering the tool, battery, and charger against defects in materials and workmanship. Registration is available through Makita's website to activate full warranty coverage. Makita's U.S. service network includes authorized repair centers nationwide for warranty claims and service support.
